J.T. Martens (1894-1960)[1] was church minister and a dramatist.

Biography

Born Jan Thomas Martens on 15 April 1894 in Greytown, he was the first minister of the Waterval NG congregation (1921 – 1928) and served in other congregations, including Uitenhage, Waterval, Port Elizabeth, Victoria-Wes, Pearston en Uniondale.

He died on 24 May, 1960.

Contribution to theatre, film, media and performance

He wrote Ansie.

He wrote the religious-didactic one-act play Twee is Beter as Een, first performed in 1967 in the church in Wolseley. Later performed in the Old Apostolic church in March 1968 by a group that would become Môrester Amateur Toneelgroep (MAT), and in Malmesbury in June 1968.
