The Grapes of Wrath is a play by Terrence Shank, based on the well-known realist novel by John Steinbeck.

The original text
The Grapes of Wrath [1] is a novel set during the Great Depression, written by American author John Steinbeck [2], published in 1939. It tells the strory of the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers who set out for California on the "mother road", along with thousands of other "Okies" seeking jobs, land, dignity, and a future in order to escape the drought, economic hardship, agricultural industry changes, and bank foreclosures at home.

Adapted for the stage by Terrence Shank.
Performance history in South Africa
1986: Staged by PACT Drama under the direction of Terrence Shank at the Alexander Theatre in Johannesburg and at the Pretoria State Theatre. The designers were Shank and Derek Swanepoel, lighting was by Stan Knight and the costume co-ordinator was Bronwen Lovegrove. In the cast were Erica Rogers, Michael McCabe, Sean Taylor, Bruce Alexander, Susan Danford, Dale Cutts and Martin le Maitre as "The Family". "The Others" were James Borthwick, Anthony James, Gina Benjamin, Graham Hopkins, Alan Ashby, Anne Curteis and Alan Swerdlow.
