The original text
First performed in 1805(?), published in Leipzig 1806. Turned into an opera with composer Philipp Jakob Riotte and performed in 1808.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Dutch by Jan Steven Van Esveldt-Holtrop, and given the slightly odd title of as De Brandschatting ("The fire estimate"). Published by him in 1805.
Performance history in South Africa
1827: Produced in Dutch by the amateur company Tot Nut en Vermaak on 21 April with De Kwade Luim (Von Kotzebue).
1835: Produced in Dutch by the Het Tooneellievend en Vereenigd Muzyk Gezelschap (with the motto Door Yver Vruchtbaar) in Stellenbosch on 7 March, as afterpiece to Elize van Wallenthorst (Anonymous). The performance was a charity event for the wounded of the Border War.
