Published as Das Gewissen: Ein Burgerliches Trauerspiel in Funf Aufzugen by Walter de Gruyter, 1799 and in W. Iffland's dramatische Werke by G. J. Göschen, 1799.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Dutch as Het Geweten by Jan Willem Jacobus Steenbergen van Goor, published in Amsterdam by Wed. J. Doll, 1802. (The title also occurs as Het Geweeten in an early South African production.)
Translated into English as Conscience by Benjamin Thompson (1776?-1816). Published in the series German theatre (Vol. 4), printed by J. Cundee, for Vernor and Hood, in 1800.
Performance history in South Africa
1818: Performed in Dutch as Het Geweeten by Tot Nut en Vermaak in their own Cape Town theatre on 5 May, 1818.
1823: Performed in Dutch as Het Geweten by Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense in the African Theatre, Cape Town theatre on 20 March, with De Keukenhelden (Jacquelin/Van Foreest).
