Julius von Sassen is a melodramatic German tragedy in four acts by Johann Heinrich Daniel Zschokke (1771–1848)[1].
Contents
The original play
A version attributed to Zschokke, but adapted by Gottlieb Wetzinger, was published in Graz in 1797.
A text attributed only to Zschokke was published in Zürich by Orell, Füssli and Company in 1798.
Translations and adaptations
Translated by an anonymous translator into Dutch as Julius van Sassen and published in Amsterdam by H. van Kesteren, 1805.
Performance history in South Africa
1829: First performed in Dutch translation in De Liefhebbery Toneel, Cape Town by Tot Nut en Vermaak on 22 August, along with De Sint Nicolaas Avond, of Het Bezoek door den Schoorsteen (Kup).
1833: Performed in Dutch by the company Tot Nut en Vermaak in De Liefhebbery Toneel, Cape Town on 12 October, with Jocrisse in Eenen Nieuwen Dienst (Dorvigny)
1878: Performed in the Oddfellows Hall, Cape Town by the Rederijkerskamer De Eendracht on 4 September, with Klaartje Scherpnagel, of De Twee Vrijers (Anon.) as an afterpiece.
