Merlin studied Drama at the University of Stellenbosch Drama Department in the early 2000s.

Stage plays he appeared in as a student include Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Robin Hood (by Keith Bain, directed by Gaerin Hauptfleisch, 1999), The War of the Worlds , Straties (by Braam van der Vyver, (KKNK, 2004), The Contingency Plan, Karnaval (The Playhouse, Somerset West , directed by Molly Mohr, 1999), Jan en die Playstation. Then went on to make a name for himself in the theatre industry, appearing in productions such as Vatmaar (directed by Janice Honeyman), Bungee Writing Finals (2002), Die Laaste Aand, Scribble, Die Krismis van Map Jacobs (2012), and many more.
