The original text
F.C.L. Bosman (1928 p. 269) suggests the original text may have been Het Verjaringsfeest ("The birthday celebration") a play in one act by P. t' Hoen (1802).

Performance history in South Africa
1825: Performed in Cape Town on 10 September, by the children's company Tot Oefening en Smaak, probably directed by Joseph Suasso de Lima, with Het Dal van Almeria (Von Kotzebue) and De Nachtwacht (Körner).
