Formerly a British Crown colony (established 1884), and known as Basutoland, Since gaining its independence from the United Kingdom on October 4, 1966, it has been known as the Kingdom of Lesotho. Entirely surrounded by South Africa, through sharing language and cultural ties, it has a symbiotic economic and cultural relationship with the RSA.
