Born Lourens Daniel Marthinus Stopforth.

He was the author of a very useful doctoral dissertation entitled Drama in South Africa, 1925-1955 :a critical survey at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, (1955, Unpublished)
Other works of criticism included Herman Charles Bosman: An Evaluation (Volume 1 of the Annals of the University College Western Cape, 1964) and a book on the South African short story in English (1954). He also wrote two novels in Afrikaans.
