Taliep Petersen and David Kramer’s Fairyland was was the first musical production to be staged and it won the FNB Vita Award for Best Musical and played to capacity houses all over South Africa. The intimate theatre was opened in a historic building, what had been South Africa's first electric power station (opened 1882). Called the Dock Rd Theatre, it put on a number of plays and musical productions in its six years of existence. Ninety percent of the work was original South African writing and this vision was pursued without any state subsidy or grant.
