The Water Babies or The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby is a children's novel by Charles Kingsley.

The original text

Written in 1862–1863 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863.

Translations and adaptations

A ballet version was staged by UCT Ballet School at the Baxter Theatre in 1982.

Performance history in South Africa

1961: Presented by Dramatic Society of East London.

1969: Sybil Marks for Theatre Workshop.

1973: Presented by Dramatic Society of East London, adapted by Maude Moorshead, directed by Joy Meaker.
