Dreams is a short play by Athol Fugard (1932-2025).
Contents
The play
The play was inspired by the Swanker contest (begun under Apartheid) - a weekly competition in which working men fulfil their dreams by dressing up and assuming roles in which they aspire in life, such as businessmen. The play shows people being creative in ways that make life worth living, and gives an example of Fugard's humour.
Referred to in McDonald's 'Afterword' to Exits and Entrances (2008) and discussed in her 2012 book The Craft of Athol Fugard. Space, Time and Silence deur Marianne McDonald. (2012).
