He began his career as an apprentice and actor in the Heunis-Rood Geselskap in 1935 for a tour of Baron Peros, Eerloos ("Without Honour"), Die Dolk ("The Dagger") and Judas Kus ("Judas Kiss").
In 1936 he broke away to found his own company under the stage name of Leon Bordeaux and to tour with Druppels van Edik en Gal. (See further Leon Bordeaux)
