The original text
A play about concerns a young parolee sent by the local priest for rehabilitation to an apparently normal suburban family in South London. Given the willingness of father, mother and teenage daughter to lead double lives of one kind or another, the explosive effect of his arrival is inevitable.
The play received its premiere in the Traverse Theatre at the festival in Edinburgh and subsequently transferred to the Piccadilly Theatre in London in December 1971. It premiered in the US at the Kansas City playhouse in 1973 with subsequent productions in Seattle, Newhaven, Washington DC and New York City.[2]
Published by Methuen, 1971.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into German by Astrid and Jürgen Fischer as Im Schoss der Familie and premiered in Germany at the Landestheater Darmstadt in 1972.[3]
Performance history in South Africa
1974: Premiered on 7 May in the Breytenbach Theatre, Pretoria, by The Playmakers, directed by Frank Shelley, with a cast that included Claire Robins. Went on to play various urban centres in the country.
