Gwyneth Lloyd studied pottery as a hobby while pursuing a career as an opera singer, in London, England, during the 1970’s. Her love for and involvement in pottery was then rekindled when marrying potter [[Anton van der Merwe]] in 1989. Together with her husband, Anton van der Merwe, Gwyneth Lloyd founded Starways Arts Centre (and the Starways Rose Theatre) in Hogsback in 1991.

In 1995, Gwyneth Lloyd founded EastCape Opera Company.

Lloyd researched and wrote the libretto to the opera, Temba and Seliba with composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen. She also wrote the libretto to The Moon Prince with composer Anthony Caplan.

Awards

Lloyd is a Nederburg Opera Prize-winner.
