Biography

Born on the East Rand and matriculated there. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch, the Sorbonne and Trinity College, Cambridge.

He passed away in Langebaan on 30 October, 2024.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He joined the SABC as a director when television started in South Africa and in 1992, when Franz Marx launched the soap Egoli for M-Net (DStv 101), Odendaal was appointed head writer, serving in this capacity for eight years.

In 2000 he premiered the popular soap opera 7de Laan on SABC2, based on an idea he had nurtured for several years, and produced under the banner of his own production company, Danie Odendaal Produksies, along with his partner and wife, the actress and director Annie Basson.

He was also the scriptwriter and/or director for a number of other television and film productions, such as the TV series like Saartjie and Dennekruin 12, the films Galery, Die Man met 'n Lyk om sy Nek, Beelde, Okavango: The Wild Frontier, Veldslag and Netwerk.
