Bastien und Bastienne is a one-act singspiel, a comic opera, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The original text

Bastien und Bastienne was one of Mozart's earliest operas, written in 1768 when he was only twelve years old.

Translations and adaptations

Translated into isiZulu, and re-titled Themba no Thembile, by David Smith.

Performance history of the opera in South Africa

1991: Performed in the Zulu translation as Themba no Thembile by the Durban Arts Association, with leading roles sung by Walter Mdleshebi and Thokozami Mkhize.
