The play is based on a central storyteller who relates three stories ("Vivingane", "Nkalimevana" and "The Three Gifts") to the children around his fire.

1993: Fireside Tales was produced by The Institute for Social and Individual Development in Africa (ISIDA) at the Guild Theatre in October 1993. The production team was as follows: Veliswa Mcata (director), Bulelani Mkohliswa (musical director and choreographer) and Barbara Richardson (set design). The cast of 100 children (aged 7-14 years, from seven primary schools around East London)) included: Bongani Mlomo, Sinethemba Mpajana, Melissa Card, Vuyolwethu Mkizwana, Sinesipho Mcata, Lukhanyo Mncono, Vaughn Delport, Sivuyile Mazingi, Sinethemba Wanga, Yandiswa Mobse and Ncedo India.
