Man van Keriot

Man van Keriot is an Afrikaans Biblical drama in five acts by Gerhard J. Beukes (1913 - 1998).

The original text

Beukes had long had a special interest in the figure of Judas Iscariot[1] and was particularly concerned with the possible motivation for the betrayal.

In 1941 he wrote a (lost) one-act play on the matter (apparently his first attempt at a one-act play), in response to an article by a dr Van der Merwe on the issue and in 1954 he returned to the theme as part of his radio cycle Jesus van Nasaret (a series of ten episodes about the birth and death of Jesus).

In 1959 he turned to the full-length drama as form to address the matter. The play was first published as Man van Keriot by the N.G. Kerk-uitgewers, Cape Town in 1959.

Translations and adaptations

Beukes later reworked the play to some extent, to focus more specifically on the disciple's motivation. The text was published by J.L. Van Schaik under the title Judas van Keriot.
