Sunday Costs Five Pesos is a Mexican folk comedy in 1 act by Josefina Niggli (1910–1983; birth name "Josephine") [1].


The original text

A comedy of Mexican village life in which a young girl, through jealousy, breaks off with her fiancé, but then - repentant - tries to win him back with the aid of well-meaning friends. Their aid however only manages to involve her in further difficulties.

Originally performed by the Carolina Playmakers at Chapel Hill on April 25, 1936. The text first published in 1937.

Translations and adaptations

Made into a TV Movie in 1957 by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)[2]

Translated into Afrikaans as Sondag Kos 5 Pesos (also referred to as Sondag Kos Vyf Pesos).

Performance history in South Africa

1947: Performed in English as Sunday Costs Five Pesos, directed by Alexander Hegerstrom, as part of the FATSSA District Drama Festival at the Little Theatre, Cape Town.

1978: Performed in Afrikaans as Sondag Kos 5 Pesos by the Ceres Amateur Toneelvereniging.

1978: Sondag Kos Vyf Pesos performed in the Libertas-teater in Stellenbosch on 17 March as part of the USAT Dramafees by students of the residences Dagbreek and Monica at the University of Stellenbosch. Directed by Joan-Helen Dry, with Annemarie Brand, Ena Naudé, Jolette Groenewald, Marelise Bester, Armand Craus. Stage manager André Human, assisted by Ettienne Roux. Prompt: A. Dill
