Fortress is a one-act play by Michael Scanlan.

Not to be confused with The Fortress by Allan Mackay

The original text

A play for teenage performers about Billy, who is nine when he accidentally finds out that he's adopted. He feels betrayed, so he retreats into a world of his own, excluding his parents, in order to devise a Fortress of Solitude, in which he models himself on Superman, another orphan.

First performed in its one-act form at LaSalle Academy in Rhode Island. Later reworked as a full-length play.

Published by Bakers Plays in 1988 and by Samuel French

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Afrikaans as Veilige Vesting by Bernie Visser.
