First performed on 21 February, 1910 at the Comédié Française and published in the same year by both the Librairie Théatrale, Artistique & Littéraire in Paris and the journal L'Illustration Théâtrale.

Translated into Afrikaans as Die Veeleisende Skilder ("The demanding painter") by F.P. van der Merwe (1918-1956).
