Taurus Uitgewers was an underground publishing house.
Also written Taurus Uitgewers, and often referred to simply as Taurus, it is known in English as Taurus Publishers
Founded as a partnership in 1975 by the writers and academics John Miles, Ampie Coetzee and Ernst Lindenberg in the face of the banning of André P. Brink's controversial novel Kennis van die aand, and in a general response to the harsh censorship of Afrikaans publications that became rife in the country in the 1970s-1980s.
Their first publication was Brink's next novel, 'n Oomblik in die wind (An Instant in the Wind) and this was followed by large number of books over the years (32 by 1984), as well as the literary journal Stet.
The founders were later also joined by Gerrit Olivier, Tienie du Plessis and Hans Pienaar and would eventually become a registered company.
Among the theatrical works published by them have been Die Laaste Middagmaal ("The last midday meal") by Wilma Stockenström (1978); Die Van Aardes van Grootoor by Pieter-Dirk Uys (1979) and Klaaglied vir Koos ("Lament for Koos"), a novel by Ingrid Winterbach (published under the pseudonym "Lettie Viljoen" in 1984, This novel was adapted for the stage by Christo Leach and Barney Simon for production at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg in 1986);
