Listed as "[[John Brougham]]" in the ''Index'' to [[F.C.L. Bosman]]'s 1980 study, though this is uncertain, since some of Bosman's references are to someone simply referred to as [[Brougham]], while others are clearly to the prominent 19th century Irish-American playwright [[John Brougham]] (1814-1880)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Brougham], whose plays were often performed in South Africa.

He visited Cape Town, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth in 1873, as part of Disney Roebuck's touring company. Usually simply billed as [[Brougham]], he started ioout in small supporting roles, and gradually rpogessed to more substantial roles, e.g.
