The original text
A drama in 5 acts (9 tableaux), written by Paul Meritt (1843/4–1895)[1], Henry Pettitt (1848-1893)[2] and Augustus Harris (1825-1873)[3], it was first performed in London at the Drury Lane Theatre on 31 July, 1880.

Performance history in South Africa
1882-3: Performed in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, by the Mabel Hayes Company as part of a season of opera and drama that opened with a Christmas pantomime (Cinderella) in 1882 and lasting till July 1883.

The World a South African periodical (1956-1980)
The journal
The World was the black daily newspaper of Johannesburg, South Africa, that had evolved out of the earlier The Bantu World and its merger with Ilanga lase Natal ("Natal Sun"), being published by Bantu Press Ltd from 1956 till 1980. After this it was replaced by The Sowetan.
The World became internationally renowned as a publication in 1976 when it published Sam Nzima's iconic photograph of Hector Pieterson, taken during the Soweto uprising of 16 June.
