Christine ou La Reine de Seize Ans ("Christine or the sixteen year old queen") is a French vaudeville in two acts by Jean-François-Alfred Bayard (1796-1853)[1]

The original text

First performed as Christine ou la reine de seize ans in Paris at the Théâtre du Gymnase on 30 January, 1828, with Jenny Vertpré (1797-1865)[] as "Christine".

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as The Youthful Queen by Charles Shannon ()[], performed in The Bowery Theatre, New York in 1852 and published by Samuel French in 1857 (Issue 196 of French's standard drama: Acting edition) as The Youthful Queen (on the cover, though a fuller title, The Youthful Queen, or Christine of Sweden, appears inside the text.) The play is credited simply to "Shannon", and no mention is made of Bayard.

Performance history in South Africa

1862: Performed as The Youthful Queen, or Christine of Sweden by Clara Tellett and her company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, on 18 August, with a performance of the song "The Carpenter" by "an amateur" and An Object of Interest (Stocqueler).
