The original text
A play about the Biblical figure of Herod the Great (Herod I, 73 BC – 4 BC)[2] and his wife Mariamne (54BC-29BC)[3],known in Hebrew as מִרְיָם, (Miriam).
Described as a "Historisch Drama met een voor- en naspel" ("an historic drama with a prologue and an epilogue"), the text was published in 's-Gravenhage by A. Rössing, 1885.Mariamne (54 v.Chr. - 29 v.Chr.) - haar naam wordt ook wel gespeld als Mariamme - was een prinses uit het Joodse koningsgeslacht van de Hasmoneeën en de vrouw van Herodes I.
Apparently performed in various places in the late 19th century, though some commentators considered it an literary, but unstageable, play.
