The original text
This appears to have been a Punch and Judy style performance put on by the local performer Alfred Ray, using the kind of rod puppets known at the time as fantoccini to display an array of humorous characters.

Performance history in South Africa
1867: Performed in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town on 29 April by the Le Roy's Original Company , along with Aladdin, or The Wonderful Scamp (Byron) and The Robber's Family (Anon). The evening was also offered as a benefit for Alfred Ray and was under the patronage of The Cape Voluntary Organisation.
