It is based on a story by King that was inspired by the real-life Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas. The original Broadway production was directed by Peter Masterson and Tommy Tune and choreographed by Tune and Thommie Walsh. It opened on June 19, 1978 at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 1,584 performances. Made into a film in 1982.
Performance history in South Africa
1979: First staged in South Africa in 1979 at His Majesty's Theatre by Des and Dawn Lindberg and starred, among others, Victor Melleney, Judy Page and Annabel Linder under the direction of Dawn Lindberg. The production was staged at the Alhambra Theatre in Durban from 31 January to 1 March 1980 and the Three Arts Theatre in Cape Town from 7 to 22 March 1980.
