First performed at the Novelty Theatre in London on 4 March 1884, and published by Samuel French in the same year.
The Australian premiere of the play was presented at the Theatre Royal in Sydney on 7 February 1885.

1884-5: Performed by the Henry Harper Company in the new Theatre Royal, Cape Town, as part of Henry Harper's first season as lessee and manager of the venue.
1886: Performed by Madame Pearmain and her company as part of a short season of eleven plays put in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, from 22 November onwards.
