The carnival procession includes troupes from the 11 metropolitan regions of the City as well as non-South African cultural groups residing in the city, such as Zimbabweans, Zambians, Ethiopians and Chinese, in their countries' traditional attire.
  
The second Joburg Carnival will see thousands of people congregate in the Newtown cultural precinct to celebrate the City’s planned year end festivities on New Year’s Eve. The theme of the 2005 carnival is ‘Nyakaza – Joburg on the move’. This design allows for a broad creative interpretation, which will be showcased in the carnival activities, as well as the procession of the carnival through the City.

Over the years a number of business entities have become involved, including City Power, Joburg Water and Pikitup. The South African Police Services (SAPS) also collaborates on the event.

it features a parade that moves through the city and across the famous Nelson Mandela Bridge into Newtown where a stage is set up. Each year is based on a specific theme and [[troupes]] decked out in creative, eye catching outfits performs for the audience and prizes are awarded for best costume, choreography and best troupe performance.
