Owned by [[MultiChoice]], the service launched in 1995 and now provides multiple channels and services to around 11.9 million subscribers in Sub-Saharan Africa (Africa excluding North Africa and Somalia)

Pay-television came to South Africa in 1986 with an analogue, single-channel service called [[M-Net]] created by [[Naspers]]. In 1993 [[Naspers]] expanded by founding a subsidiary company, [[Multichoice]], to handle the business arm of [[M-Net]] (e.g.  decoder sales, subscriber services and account management) and in 1995 [[Multichoice]] announced that it was launching a new digital, satellite service in South Africa to be known as [[DStv]]. This was officially launched on 6 October 1995.
