Trial by Jury of Dr Abstinence is a play or skit by an anonymous author.
Not to be confused with the two other pieces, The Trial by Jury (1811) by Theodore Hook and Trial by Jury (1875) by Gilbert and Sullivan.

The original text
Mentioned by F.C.L. Bosman (1980: p.268), but there is no inciation of author or whether this was a locally written work, or an imported piece. It was apparently a propaganda piece intended to counter excessive drinking in society.
Translations and adaptations
Performance history in South Africa
1863: Performed in the Temperance Hall by the Cape Town Total Abstinence Society in October, it was apparently a successful enough to be repeated in the Music Hall on Church Square later the month.
