Don't Judge by Appearances is a farce in one act by John Maddison Morton (1811-1891)[1].

The original text

First performed at the Royal Princess' Theatre, London in 22 October, 1855. Published by T.H. Lacy in London and by Charles H. Spencer in Boston in 1855.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1861: Performed by the Officers of the Regiment (North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot) as Don't Judge by Appearances in the Garrison Theatre, Grahamstown on 5, 11 and 19 April, with Urgent Private Affairs (Coyne) and A Night at Notting Hill (Yates and Harrington). Regarding the plays, the North Lincoln Sphinx reports that: "In the bills, some of the performers appeared under fictitious names, which are alluded to by our correspondent in his letter. So, for the enlightenment of our readers, we give the assumed as well as the real name in our copy of the cast of characters." (In curly brackets). The cast of the Morton play consisted of: Captain G.E. Bulger (Major Pepper), A. Fraser Esq. (Frank Topham), Captain G.C. Bartholomew (John Plump, servant to Major Pepper), Miss Marian Ramsay {W. Malcolm} Esq. (Miss Diana Pepper, Major Pepper's niece), G.H.W. Tremeuheere (? illegible) Esq. (Miss Angelina Pepper, Major Pepper's niece). 1862: Performed as Don't Judge by Appearances by members of the Dramatic Club of the North Lincolnshire Regiment of Foot in Keiskama Hoek on August 30, September 11 and 19. The cast consisted of .
