Contents
The original text
Described as a "karakterschets in vier bedrijven, voor rederijkers", it was published in Purmerende by J. Schuitemaker, 1870.
The play is based on an original story by Levin Schücking (1814-1883)[1] called Husar und Pandur (first published in German in the magazine Die Gartenlaube in 1860). Translated into Dutch by J. J. A. Goeverneur, it was published in the collection Houw en Trouw. Tooneelen uit het leven van een Oostenrijksch soldaat, onder Maria Theresia ("Keep and Marry. Scenes fromn the life of an Austrian soldier, under [the rule of] Maria Theresia") in 1861 by by Erven C. M. van Bolhuis Hoitsema, Groningen.
Translations and adaptations
Both F.C.L. Bosman and Ingmar Koch ascribe the Dutch version performed in Cape Town to the local author P. Faddegon, a translation supposedly based on the German original.
Performance history in South Africa
1874: Produced in Dutch by the amateur company Aurora II on 16 July in the Oddfellows Hall, Cape Town, as afterpiece to Het Losse Schot (Van Estveldt Holtrop).
