Die Naaimasjien (“The Sewing Machine”) is a 2008 Afrikaans one-woman play by Rachelle Greeff, about a woman in an old age home, reminiscing about her life.

The original text

Die Naaimasjien won the 2008 Nagtegaal Award for new playtexts.

Translations and adaptations

Translated in 2012 into English as The Sewing Machine by Hennie van Greunen.

Performance history in South Africa

2008/9: Staged by Joho! Productions at the Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch on 26 July 2008 as a try-out production before going to the Aardklop Festival in Potchefstroom and other arts festivals, directed by Hennie van Greunen and starring Sandra Prinsloo. The production won a number of awards, including best actress awards for Prinsloo.

2012: The Sewing Machine, the Van Greunen English translation was staged by Joho! Productions at the Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch in July before being performed at the Edinburgh Festival [1] in August, again directed by Van Greunen and starring Prinsloo.
