A Singspiel (literally a "sung play") is a form of German-language music drama, with spoken dialogue, alternated with ensembles, songs, ballads, and arias. It is somewhat related to the English form known as ballad opera[1] and is in fact largely viewed as a type of opera today.

Known as a sangspel in Afrikaans.
