He worked with three Performing Arts Councils, notably for PACOFS in the late 1960s and early 1970s, initially as actor, later as drama manager. In this time he performed in and/or directed most of the small ensemble’s productions. After that became a freelance actor for radio, television and stage.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
He directed such memorable productions as Die Pluimsaad Waai Vêr (19**), Kanna hy kô Hystoe (19**), Becket (19**), The Tempest (196*), Die Van Aardes van Grootoor (1978), Siener in die Suburbs (as “Tjokkie”), Boeing-Boeing (as “Bernard”), Hello and Goodbye (as “Johnnie”) and performed in 'n Seder val in Waterkloof (as “Van van Vuuren”). He performed in Festen in 2007.
Later in 2009 he and his wife Lida Botha performed in and had national success with Oupa en Ouma sit op die stoep , written for them and directed by Leon Kruger, followed in 2012 by the sequel Oupa en Ouma sit op die stoep en raak romanties, also written and directed byLeon Kruger. In 2012 they founded JohanLida Produksies, to tour the production, Johan now directing.
Also has had roles in many radio plays and a few films and TV series, including Arende (198*), **, Oupa en Ouma sit op die stoep (2012).
