He was a musical director for the company Tot Nut en Vermaak in Cape Town in the 1830s. Praised for the quality of his work by a correspondent in the De Zuid-Afrikaan of 23 August, 1833 (who referred to him as "De Heer Beck" , i.e. "the gentleman Beck").
