Biography
Born Hendri Leon Francious Maré in Pietersburg, on 14 September 1889, and went to school at the Boys' High School, Wellington and in 1907 to the Eendragskool in Pretoria. He took a number of civil service courses over the years. He married in 1930 and the couple had one daughter.
He joined the civil service after finishing school and worked there for most of his life. writing in his spare time.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Primarily a writer of shorts stories and novels, he also dramatized two works, namely Mooi Annie and Die jonge du Pré (published as Jong du Pree : toneelstuk in drie bedrywe by J.L. van Schaik, 1924).
Awards, etc.
Awarded the Hertzog Prize for Prose in 1920.
