Biography
He was born on 4 July 1948 in Johannesburg. A highly respected academic, a leading figure in the transitional phase and the post-apartheid endeavour to identify and support a “South African aesthetic”. His collection of stories (Fools and Other Stories) was published in 1983. The 1998 film Fools, directed by Ramadan Suleman and starring Ken Gampu, Patrick Shai, Corney Mabaso and others, is based on these stories. At the Fespaco (Festival Panafricaine du Cinema a Ouagadougou) awards ceremony in March 1999 the film won the coveted Oumarou Ganda Best First Fiction Film Award
