Summertime is the English translation of Il Paese Delle Vacanze ("vacation land"), an Italian play in three acts by Ugo Betti (1892-1953)[1].

The original text
Originally written in 1937, it was part of a trilogy of satirical plays by Betti, alongside Una Bella Domenica di Settembre (1935, "A Beautiful Sunday in September") and I Nostri Sogni (1936, "Our People's Dreams").

Translated from the Italian into English by Henry Reed as Summertime, with the subtitle An idyll in three acts and published by Samuel French, 1957.
Translated into Afrikaans from the Italian by Alewyn Lee as Skrikkeljaar ("Leap Year"), with the subtitle also 'n Idille in drie bedrywe and published by DALRO, 1968.
South African productions
1958: Produced in Afrikaans as Skrikkeljaar by National Theatre Organisation. Directed by Robert Mohr with Berdine Grünewald, Eghard van der Hoven, Gerrit Wessels, Mathilde Hanekom, Sann de Lange, Reenen van Niekerk, Salie Vermaak, Louisa Aucamp. Costumes by Doreen Graves and décor by Frank Graves.
