J.P. Smuts (1934?*-2015) was an academic, compiler of playtexts, and a theatre and drama critic. **

Studied at the University of Stellenbosch completing BA (1950), BA Hons (1957) B.Ed. (1959), Hons BA (1960), MA 1968, D.Litt. (1975).

He became lecturer and professor of Afrikaans literature there in 19*.
