Originally introduced by the [[United Tobacco Company]], who sponsored them until 1977,  when the [[Oude Meester Foundation for the Performing Arts]] took over such awards, renaming the project the [[Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards]] in 1979. The Three Leaf Arts Award was a Western Cape award for excellence in the arts, including theatre.

Originally instituted by the United Tobacco Company in 1965 and sponsored them until 1977, whereafter the Oude Meester Foundation for the Performing Arts took over the sponsorship, the project the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards.


The awards were made for the first time in 1965, for the preceding year's productions.
