The original text
Based on a French original by J.A. Jacquelin. According to Charles Etienne Boniface (cit. Bosman, 1928: p 276), the French play was itself apparently a parody of Voltaire's five act tragedy Tancrède.
The Dutch text was published anonymously in Amsterdam by Pieter Johannes Uylenbroek, in 1799.

1823: Performed in Dutch by Boniface's company Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense in the African Theatre, Cape Town theatre as on 20 March, with Het Geweten (Iffland).
