Career
He started his theatrical career as a ballet dancer under the tuition of Dulcie Howes. He went to London in 1954 and spent seven years in Britain acting with some of the foremost English repertory companies.
Bales joined the SABC on returning to South Africa and returned to the stage in 1961.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
In Johannesburg he appeared in The Irregular Verb to Love, Breaking Point, The Cherry Orchard. His debut with CAPAB was as the Police Doctor in The Physicists.
He was also seen in Iepekonders, Policy for Murder (1963), The Talking Horse,
