Originally simply called [[Arts Alive]], it later was renamed to the [[Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival]]. Founded by [[Christopher Till]] in 1992 and inaugurated in 1993 as an annual festival. A project of the City of Johannesburg, it is intended to celebrate arts and culture.

These genres are the focus of each year’s extensive programme which is also enhanced through partnerships with other festivals (among them ‘Shared History: The Indian Experience in South Africa’), educational institutions, non-profit organisations, cultural groups and many more.
