Quoted from the programme of Pieter Toerien's Snake Beneath the Rose in 1986: 'Gavin started ballet training at the age of 10 under the tutilage of Trevor Dodd, and later with Ivy Conmee. At 14 he entered the Johannesburg School for Art, Ballet and Music under Marjorie Sturman, Ruth Inglestone and Josie Pretorius.
