(full title The Constant Couple, or A Trip to the Jubilee) A comedy by George Farquhar.
The play
Written in 1699 and performed to acclaim at the Drury Lane Theatre in 1700. It was followed this by writing a sequal and two other plays using the same characters - Sir Harry Wildair (1701), The Inconstant, or the Way to Win Him (1702) and The Twin Rivals (1702).
Translation and adaptation
A German translation and adaptation was done by Friedrich Ludwig Schröder under the title Der Ring , a comedy in four acts. First performed in 1783 in Vienna. (
He also translated Farquhar's sequel (Sir Harry Wildair) as Der Ring, oder die unglückliche Ehe durch Delikatesse. Performed in Hamburg 1788, published by Rottmann, 1790.
Performances in South Africa
1836: A Dutch translation, entitled De Ring (credited to Schröder, so probably based on his German version) was produced in Stellenbosch on 4 June 1836 by Door Yver Vruchtbaar, with as afterpiece De Wonder Doctor (Molière).
