MDALI comes from umDali meaning “creator” and is the acronym for the Music, Drama and Literature Institute, an umbrella organisation for several cultural groups in the greater Johannesburg area, notably in townships like Alexandra and Soweto. It was one of a number of arts and culture organizations associated with the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1970s-1980s.
